The perfect Hamilton Island Holiday

During our road trip through Queensland, there was one stop we simply couldn’t skip: the Whitsundays and the Great Barrier Reef.

From Airlie Beach, we took the ferry to Hamilton Island, one of the 74 islands that form the Whitsundays. And honestly – the moment we arrived, we knew this place was special. Turquoise water, white sandy beaches, palm trees swaying in the breeze, and little islands scattered across the horizon. It almost didn’t feel real.

Little tip if you’re traveling on a budget: you don’t necessarily have to stay overnight on Hamilton Island. A day trip is absolutely possible and can save you quite a bit on accommodation.

If you’re currently planning your Whitsundays trip (or still trying to figure out how to organize everything), here’s everything we learned.

Getting to the Whitsundays

There are two main ways to get there: by plane or by ferry.

Hamilton Island has its own airport, with direct flights from Sydney, Melbourne, Cairns, and Brisbane. So if you’re short on time, flying in is definitely the easiest option.

If Hamilton Island isn’t your final stop, there’s a marina close to the airport where ferries run regularly to the other islands. The shuttle between airport and marina is free, which makes everything super easy.

The other option is taking the ferry from Airlie Beach or Shute Harbour. We decided to leave from Shute Harbour because there seemed to be more parking spaces available for our rental car. And one important thing to know: you can’t bring your car onto the resort islands.

For schedules and prices, we booked through Cruise Whitsundays.

Which island should you choose?

There are four main resort islands: Hamilton Island, Hayman Island, Daydream Island, and Long Island.

We chose Hamilton Island because it offers the most flexibility – plenty of day tours, different accommodation options, restaurants, and activities. It felt like the perfect mix between relaxation and things to do.

Hamilton Island is the largest and most diverse of the four. It has its own airport, lots of restaurants, beaches, hiking trails, and countless tour options.

Hayman Island is clearly the luxury option. The island is home exclusively to the InterContinental Resort – so if you’re looking for a high-end escape, this is your place.

Daydream Island is smaller, very family-friendly, and known for its “Living Reef.” It’s ideal for a short and easy getaway.

Long Island feels more natural and quiet – perfect if you’re looking for something more remote and peaceful.

Where we stayed on Hamilton Island

There’s something for every budget here: apartments, hotels, luxury resorts.

The Whitsunday Apartments are usually one of the more affordable options, starting from around 176 AUD per night.

If you’re looking for something truly special, there’s Qualia – a 5-star, adults-only luxury resort.

We stayed at the Reef View Hotel, which is centrally located right by the beach and has several pools. It was the perfect base for exploring the island during the day and relaxing in the afternoon.

What to do on Hamilton Island

Hamilton Island is mainly about beach life – and we loved that. The beaches are perfect for swimming and snorkeling, and you can rent SUP boards, kayaks, and more. At our hotel, those were even included.

For sunset, you absolutely have to go up to One Tree Hill. It’s a popular spot, so try to go a bit earlier – otherwise the bus fills up quickly and you’ll either have to wait or walk.

If you feel like being a bit more active, there are several hiking trails across the island.

We decided to hike up to Passage Peak for sunset. The climb is steep (around 2 km uphill), and you should definitely bring enough water and plan enough time – but once you reach the top, you’re rewarded with a 360° view over the islands. It took us about an hour to get to the summit, and it was completely worth it.

Some other beautiful hikes on the island:

  • Escape Beach – a moderate hike leading to a secluded white sand beach surrounded by huge rocks.

  • Coral Cove – one of those hikes where you feel like you’re walking straight into paradise. Palm trees, crystal-clear water, and even a swing.

  • Resort Lookout – a slightly easier option with great views over the island.

  • Hideaway Bay – a quieter, less visited corner of the island (rocky beach though).

  • South East Head Trail – a longer hike with a fun photo stop at the giant chair on the way back.

Golf on Dent Island

Right next to Hamilton Island is Dent Island, home to one of Australia’s most famous golf courses.

If you play golf and have the right handicap, this is definitely a unique experience. If not, you can still visit the restaurant overlooking the course – but make sure to book in advance.

The ferry to Dent Island departs from the marina (separate from the main ferry terminal) and is free if you have a reservation.

The absolute highlight: Scenic flight over the Great Barrier Reef

One of the main reasons we chose Hamilton Island was the easy access to day tours – especially the scenic flights over the Great Barrier Reef.

Hamilton Island Air offers several flights a day by small plane, helicopter, or seaplane. Since this is one of the most popular activities, booking ahead is essential.

We chose the small plane. The flight lasts about an hour, and the pilot makes sure both sides get equally good views. You fly all the way out to the Great Barrier Reef and the famous Heart Reef.

Seeing the reef from above is something I’ll never forget. The colors, the endless blue, the shapes of the coral formations – it’s even more impressive than you imagine. For us, it was absolutely worth it.

Whitehaven Beach

Another must-do is a trip to Whitehaven Beach.

We chose the half-day tour, which only visits the northern end of the beach. If you book the full-day tour, you also have time to hike up to Hill Inlet for the iconic viewpoint. Since we had already seen everything from above during our scenic flight, we decided the shorter option was enough for us.

Most tours can be booked with Cruise Whitsundays. If you specifically want to be dropped off directly at Hill Inlet Beach, you need to book with Ocean Rafting – they’re the only company allowed to land there.

You can also start this tour from Airlie Beach or Daydream Island, but it takes longer and is usually slightly more expensive.

During stinger season (summer), stinger suits are provided free of charge. You can also book extras like picnic packages, overnight camping on Whitehaven Beach, or even combine it with a scenic flight.

Getting around on Hamilton Island

Hamilton Island is car-free, which gives it a really relaxed vibe.

You can either rent a golf cart (yes, even with child seats) or use the free shuttle buses, which run from 7:30 am to 10:45 pm.

Most places are close enough to walk anyway.

Our favorite food spots

Food on the island is generally more expensive than on the mainland, but there are still some great options:

  • The Clubhouse – great food with an incredible view over the golf course.

  • Popeye’s Fish & Chippery – perfect for affordable fish & chips.

  • Marina Tavern – relaxed pub-style food with generous portions and a marina view.

  • Bob’s Bakery – ideal for breakfast or a quick snack (try the meat pies!).

  • Manta Ray – casual, family-friendly, right at the marina.

  • Pizzeria & Gelato Bar – pizza and ice cream always work.

  • One Tree Hill – our favorite sunset spot, with a drink in hand and the sun slowly disappearing into the ocean.

And honestly – ending the day up there, watching the sky turn pink and orange over the Whitsundays, was the perfect way to experience Hamilton Island.
